Is it Time to Replace Your Filling?

Posted on 6/23/2016 by Zac Bird

There are a variety of reasons why you might want to replace your fillings, and these are a few of the signs that the time has come.

Pain and Discomfort

If your tooth feels painful or uncomfortable, especially if it is sensitive to hot and cold or pressure when you bite, this might be a sign that your filling needs some sort of attention, possibly even replacement.

Fillings can crack or leak, which will cause these uncomfortable symptoms. When you consider that some of the fillings in your teeth may have been there since you were a child, it is easy to see that they might start to fail and need replacement, and these symptoms are a clear indication that you need to see your dentist.

The Threat of Oral Health Problems

If your dentist has detected that your existing filing has margins that are leaking, he may recommend replacement in order to protect your oral health. Fillings with leaky margins could allow bacteria to seep in via the gap in order to access the inner workings of your tooth. This could result in new decay that could cause further damage to your tooth.

Appearance
One reason that people choose to replace their fillings is cosmetic concerns. If you have large, silver fillings, you may be embarrassed to laugh or open your mouth wide, as you don't want to show off a mouth full of metal.

Also, if you had a cavity in one of the teeth toward the front of your mouth, options like resin fillings can be more aesthetically pleasing and attractive, so this is a good reason to consider a switch.
