My Tooth Feels Loose

Posted on 8/23/2016 by Zac Bird
A woman suffering from a loose tooth. There are several reasons a tooth can feel loose, it can be because of an impact injury, or due to gum disease or an unconscious sleeping disorder called bruxism. The effects of continuous bruxism can be very damaging to your teeth with expensive results.

What is Bruxism?

Bruxism is a sleeping disorder noted by its characteristics. The patient will unconsciously grind their teeth, wearing away enamel and causing the surfaces of your teeth to flatten, almost like sanding their teeth, or will clench down so hard that they can cause breakage. This can have extreme effects on your teeth that can be painful and expensive.

The cause of this disorder is somewhat unknown, though it has been linked to stress. As a reaction to stress, this condition can be very temporary, though it doesn't take much to cause serious harm. If you are waking to a sore jaw, pain in your mouth, or an awareness that you have been grinding or clenching, contact our office for more information.

What do I do if my tooth feels loose?

Patients are capable of loosening teeth due to bruxism. This can have serious consequences. Each tooth is attached with multiple ligaments, these ligaments are able to be stretched, much like a rubber band is, causing a tooth to feel loose. If left alone, the tooth should tighten back up and become strong again.

If the tooth feels extraordinarily loose, contact our office, we may be able to create a splint to help protect the tooth while it tightens back up. If your case of bruxism has reached the point that teeth are beginning to loosen, don't hesitate to contact our office, there are things we can do to help. Options such as sleeping with a mouthguard can be a simple and cheap solution.
