What is Chewing Tobacco Doing to Your Mouth?

A man holding a can of chewing tobacco. Many people incorrectly believe that chewing tobacco is somehow less dangerous than smoking an actual cigarette. Unfortunately, when it comes to your mouth and oral health, this couldn't be further from the truth. Find out what chew is doing to your mouth.

An Unattractive Smile

Chewing tobacco is a good way to take a bright, white smile and turn it yellow and grimy. Prolonged use of chewing tobacco will certainly stain your teeth and tongue.

If that wasn't bad enough, you'll also have chronic bad breath, which most people will agree is an equally unattractive quality.

Increased Decay and Cavities

Smokeless tobacco includes sugar, toxins, and a variety of other agents that wreak havoc on your teeth. This will lead to tooth enamel damage and can contribute to the development of cavities.

Receding Gums

Placing chewing tobacco between your gums and the cheek will cause constant irritation to your oral tissues. The end result will be permanent damage to the gums and the bone that surround it. When the gum tissue is damaged, it will begin to pull away from your teeth. This will drastically alter the appearance of your smile, and when additional enamel is exposed, more of the tooth will be susceptible to decay and sensitivity. Significant recession can ultimately lead to tooth loss.

Oral Cancer

There are 28 cancer causing agents found inside of tobacco, and when you have a habit of chewing, your gums, cheeks, throat, and lips will constantly be exposed to these toxins. The end result could be cancer of the larynx, oral cavity, esophagus, and the pharynx. If you do use chewing tobacco, be sure to visit your dentist regularly for oral cancer screenings.

If those aren't enough reasons to compel you to quit using chewing tobacco, contact our office. We can examine your teeth to determine what damage is already present and how we can help.
